
Getting the Light Just Right in Infrared Heating
When we design our infrared lamps, we’re playing a balancing act. We want to deliver plenty of heat, but we have to be careful about the light that comes with it. Think about a nursery or a place where you’re brooding young animals. In those spots, a harsh blue glare or a bit of UV radiation isn’t just annoying—it can actually hurt developing eyes or sensitive skin. That’s a problem we can’t ignore. How we soften the glow To get that “soft” feel, we nudge the emission spectrum toward the long-wave infrared range. Basically, we use a specific blend of quartz glass and add internal coatings that act like a filter. These coatings do the heavy lifting. They block out the short-wave radiation—the stuff that causes glare and makes your eyes strain—but they let the actual warmth slide right through. You end up with a heat source that warms the body without blinding the subject. It’s a much gentler experience. The build and the safety side Inside the lamp, there’s a tungsten filament tucked into a vacuum-sealed quartz tube. We go with quartz because it’s tough. It can take a massive hit of thermal shock without just cracking under the pressure. We also make sure the surface temperature stays consistent. You don’t want a lamp that’s so hot it causes an instant burn if someone brushes against it. Plus, since this is radiant heat, it warms the object directly. It doesn’t waste energy trying to heat up all the air in the room first. A few things to keep in mind Here’s the trade-off: when you filter out those high-energy frequencies to stop the glare, you lose a bit of that raw, industrial intensity. You won’t get the same heat density as a standard halogen lamp. Because of that, you’ve got to be smart about your layout. If you space the lamps too far apart, you’ll lose that cozy “thermal blanket” effect. And one last tip? Wire them into a regulated circuit. Voltage spikes are the fastest way to burn out a filament, and nobody wants to be replacing bulbs more often than they have to.
