
Why we put our IP55 heaters through the wringer
Putting an infrared heater in a bathroom is a bit of a gamble. You’re taking high-voltage electronics and sticking them right in the middle of steam, humidity, and wild temperature swings. Now, you’ll see an “IP55” rating on the box. That’s great—it means the unit can handle dust and a few splashes of water. But here’s the thing: a rating is just a snapshot. It doesn’t tell you what happens to the materials after three years of breathing in thick bathroom steam.
The sneaky side of steam
Steam is different from liquid water. It’s smaller, meaner, and can slip through seals that would stop a splash dead in its tracks. Think about it. The heater gets scorching hot, then it cools down in a damp room. That creates a vacuum effect. It basically sucks the moist air right into the chassis. If those quartz tube seals aren’t perfect, you’re looking at short circuits or a burnt-out filament way sooner than you should. That’s why we use damp-heat aging tests. We basically bake the units in high-humidity chambers to see exactly where the seals give up and where the coatings start to peel.
Rust is the enemy
Cheap steel or low-grade aluminum just can’t handle constant vapor. They rust. Simple as that. We use specific powder coatings and alloys to fight this, but we don’t just take the supplier’s word for it. We push the materials to their absolute limit. We’re looking for tiny pits on the reflector or oxidation on the electrical terminals. And that’s where it gets dangerous. When a terminal oxidizes, resistance climbs. That means the connection gets hot. Really hot. Enough to melt your wiring or trip your breaker in the middle of a shower.
The balancing act
You might wonder, “Why not just seal it tighter?” Well, there’s a catch. If you seal a unit too tightly to get a higher IP rating, the electronics can’t breathe. They overheat and fry themselves during a long session. It’s a balancing act. We tweak the seal just enough so the moisture stays out, but the heat can still escape. Just make sure you leave a bit of breathing room around the unit when you install it. We aren’t claiming these things last forever. Nothing does. But we make sure they actually do the job they were built for, for as long as they’re supposed to.
