Ever stepped into a chilly bathroom and turned on an infrared heater, only to feel like you’re staring directly into the sun? It happens. Those short-wave heaters are great for instant warmth—especially when you’re shivering in a drafty room—but that harsh glare is a problem. It’s one thing if it’s just you, but if you’ve got a baby or someone with sensitive eyes in the house, you can’t have a light that feels like an interrogation lamp. The trick is finding a way to keep the heat high without the blinding light. Dealing with the glare Most standard lamps throw out a huge range of light. To fix the eye strain, we use coated quartz glass or specific filters. Think of it as a shield that blocks out that sharp blue light and glare that makes you squint. We shift the heat into a different wave range. The result? You still feel that cozy warmth on your skin, but the lamp doesn’t act like a high-intensity spotlight in your face. Where to put it (and how much power to use) We usually suggest mounting these on the wall. The goal is to create a “warmth zone.” You want to feel the heat without having to stand directly under a light that burns your retinas. We’ve tweaked the reflectors to push the heat downward while softening the light. Then there’s the wattage. High wattage means the room gets warm fast, but it also makes the lamp brighter. To balance that, we use dimmable controllers or special filament alloys. It lets us keep the heat efficient even when we dial down the brightness. The trade-offs Here’s the honest part: those filters do take a small toll. Because the coating blocks some light, you might lose about 5-10% of the raw heat compared to a clear glass bulb. It’s a small price to pay for your eyesight, but we make up for it by increasing the surface area of the heating element. Just a heads-up—make sure your wiring can handle the load. If the voltage drops, the lamp might flicker, and nobody wants that in their bathroom.
