
Stop Wiping Your Bathroom Mirror
There is nothing more annoying than stepping out of a hot shower and having to wipe a clear circle into a foggy mirror with your hand. It’s a mess. But if you use infrared (IR) heaters, that problem basically disappears.
Why Infrared Actually Works
Most heaters try to warm up the air around them, which takes forever. Infrared is different. It doesn’t care about the air; it sends heat straight into the glass and right toward you. It’s instant. The second you flip the switch, you feel it. Because these elements are designed to hit a high power density, they push the glass past the dew point almost immediately. Your mirror clears up in seconds, not minutes.
Making it “Smart”
If you want to get fancy, you can hook this up to your smart home. I usually suggest a Zigbee or Matter-enabled controller. That way, you don’t even have to touch a switch. You can set it to kick in the moment your humidity sensor notices the room is getting steamy, or just tell your voice assistant to do it while you’re still scrubbing your hair. One quick tip on the technical side: use a solid-state relay (SSR). If you want to fine-tune the temperature—which I highly recommend—this lets you use Pulse Width Modulation (PWM). It keeps the glass from getting too hot, which means you won’t have to worry about the mirror cracking from thermal stress.
A Few Things to Watch Out For
Here is the catch. High-wattage IR elements are fast, but they’re thirsty for power. If you’re putting this into an older house, please check your wiring first. You don’t want to be standing in a towel when your circuit breaker trips because the mirror pulled too much current. Also, give the mirror some room to breathe. If the frame is totally airtight, the heat gets trapped behind the glass and can fry your electronics. Just a small gap or a few vents will keep everything running cool and safe.
