
How to Actually Size an Infrared Heater for Your Bathroom
If you’ve ever stepped out of a hot shower into a freezing bathroom, you know that feeling. It’s miserable. Ceiling-mounted infrared heaters are a lifesaver here because they don’t waste time heating up the air—they heat you and the surfaces around you instantly. But here’s the thing: if you pick the wrong wattage, you’re either wasting electricity or shivering in a cold spot.
Getting the Power Right
Think of wattage as the “punch” of the heater. If you’re dealing with a tiny powder room (under 4m²), don’t overdo it. A 400W to 600W lamp is usually plenty. Since the ceilings are often lower in these rooms, too much power just makes the place feel like a sauna. Plus, if it gets too hot, the safety cutoff will keep tripping, which is just annoying. For your average family bathroom (around 6m² to 10m²), you’ll want something in the 800W to 1200W range. If you have a massive master bath or a big wet room, you’re looking at 1500W or more. You might even want a few different lamps. Just a heads-up: if you go too low on the power, the heater will run at full blast 24/7 trying to hit the target temperature. That’s a great way to burn out your filament way faster than it should.
Where to Put Them
Infrared is all about line-of-sight. If the heater can’t “see” you, it can’t warm you. A single, massive lamp creates one giant hot spot right underneath it. That’s not usually what you want. Instead, try using two medium-power lamps spaced apart. It spreads the warmth across the whole floor, so you aren’t dancing around trying to find the one warm spot in the room.
A Quick Warning on Wiring
More power means more pull from your electrical panel. If you’re putting a 2000W unit into an older house, please, check your wiring first. Most residential circuits can handle it, but if the wiring is old and thin, it can actually get hot. Also, make sure your ceiling bracket is sturdy. You don’t want a heavy unit sagging, and you definitely want enough breathing room around the housing so you don’t accidentally scorch your drywall.
